necios son muchos
el número de los tontos será infinitohilos de pensamientos forman una sinuosa tela;
Siempre bien planchado. Siempre a tiempo.
No acelera nada, no cambia nada, no explica, no soluciona nada. Solo repito.
the fools are many
the number of fools will be infinitethreads of thought weave a sinuous cloth;
we are promised a single future; they hand us entertaining ruins; governments that speak of stability while they improvise; they talk about how to keep content the billions of bodies they control; they wear suit and tie, they remain, like that, no matter what. The names change, the logos, the crises; the uniform, no, not yet. I see it in press conferences, board meetings, urgent statements and rehearsed apologies.
Always well pressed. Always on time. As if the cloth could hold up what no longer holds.
There is something deeply strange in this that persists. The suit does not answer chaos but covers it, like a rug hanging from the neck, over the dust that coats the heart. It works as a clean, smooth surface over an ever more unstable and rugged ground. The tie tightens the story, gives it an order. It shapes the idea that someone is in charge.
To paint these suits today is neither a nostalgic gesture nor a fashion comment. It is to look head-on at one more contradiction. Of a world that declares itself flexible, innovative, technological, futuristic, disruptive — but no, gentlemen, necktied gentlemen, the costume is still the same one for managing the disaster.
I clumsily insist on painting them as something grotesque. It speeds nothing up, changes nothing, explains nothing, solves nothing. I only repeat. Obstinate, the suit begins to fail in my head; it is flexible but it will break, if this vvvirus does not let go of the rigid.
I took my tie off a while ago, thanks to painting. I am a virophage of this virus.
the strength of fools
never underestimate the power of foolsThis set of sketches, turned into drawings and paintings, starts from a suspicion hard to ignore: the exercise of power sometimes passes through a hot iron that flattens and removes the wrinkles.
It is knotted carefully before the mirror, tightened at the neck, and off to work. The suit and tie, light in weight, heavy in meaning, have achieved an admirable feat: the neutralization of organization, of hierarchies, of trust, laid over the bodies with no need for explanations. Elegant, some say, as if we were really choosing.
How that so-masculine outfit, inherited from the military world, slipped into the diplomatic and the corporate, infiltrated offices, classrooms, courtrooms, funerals and family photographs. It does not matter who wears it: the suit already knows which role to play.
Painting enters here not as ornament but as a form of incisive delay. While the business world demands speed, efficiency and immediate results, the practice of painting insists on its almost uncomfortable slowness. To paint is to undo the knot — to paint, anything, above all ties, is to breathe again.
This project does not seek to destroy the suit or declare war on formality. Rather, it proposes to look at it closely, copy it with irony and return it slightly deformed. It is to reveal the fragility of the boss, with his craving to be immortal — but he will be a fragile immortal, a genre-painting symbol, empty.
Today I watched the news, and there they still are, these strange agents, addicts — to oil, to consumption, to money, to civilization.
